The Academy Charter

WizoCat's privacy policy and terms of use

Last updated : 4 October 2026

1. Who is behind WizoCat ?

WizoCat (the board game, the wizocat.com website and the app) is designed, illustrated and developed by Christophe Matthieu, an independent creator based in Belgium, acting as the data controller within the meaning of the GDPR.

For any question about this charter or your data : dev@wizocat.com

2. Our principle

You can discover and play WizoCat without creating an account and without providing any personal data whatsoever. No advertising tracker is used until you have voluntarily given us your email address. We never sell or rent any data, to anyone, ever.

3. Which data is processed, and why ?

3.1 Playing the game (website and app)

The app installed from Google Play is an exception : it works entirely offline. It collects, transmits and shares no data at all — not even the technical tracker described below, which is removed from the package at build time. What follows concerns the wizocat.com website.

The game works without registration. It only embeds a technical tracker with a twofold purpose : checking that the game works properly (anomaly detection) and protecting the app against tampering. This tracker does not collect data that could identify you and is not used for advertising purposes.

The messenger butterfly (“Report a problem”) sends your description and your browser's technical characteristics, without identification, kept for 90 days. If you leave your email address there — it is optional — it is used only to reply to you and is erased with the report.

Legal basis : legitimate interest (security and reliability of the service).

3.2 Local saves

Your progress and your preferences (language, sound…) are saved locally on your device (local storage of the browser or the app). This data never leaves your device.

3.3 Joining the Academy (email address)

Access to the player portal requires an email address. It serves three purposes : letting you know about the game's launch and important news; identifying you at the online tables and preventing abuse (one seat per person); and giving you back your referral bonuses if you ever come back. For that last purpose we keep a “fingerprint” of your address (a cryptographic hash with a secret key) : it cannot be used to write to you or to recover your address, only to recognise the same address if it is entered again. It is pseudonymised data, not anonymous data. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email or by writing to us.

Legal basis : your consent for the news, which you can withdraw at any time; our legitimate interest for identification at the tables and for the fingerprint (security of the service, continuity of your bonuses).

3.4 Buying a coffee (donations)

You can support the project with a one-off donation through the Buy Me a Coffee platform. The donation takes place entirely on that provider's website : your payment details are processed there by them and never reach us. We only receive the name (or nickname), the optional message and the email address associated with the donation, so that we can thank you and — if you wished it — display your little message and your apprentice name on the site's thank-you page, until you ask for its removal.

Legal basis : the fulfilment of your donation ; the public display of your message and your name relies on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

3.5 Audience measurement and advertising

No third-party advertising pixel or tracker is activated for visitors who have not provided an email address. If you have joined the Academy, measurement tools may be used to help more people discover the game ; you can object to this at any time by writing to us.

4. Who is this data shared with ?

Only with the technical providers strictly necessary to run the service : hosting and delivery of the site (OVH and Cloudflare), sending emails (Brevo) and collecting donations (Buy Me a Coffee). These providers act on our instructions and do not use your data for their own purposes. Your data is never sold, rented or exchanged.

5. For how long ?

Your email address is kept for as long as your account exists. Unsubscribing closes the account : the address, the apprentice name and the login data are erased immediately. Only the fingerprint of the address (§3.3) is kept, to give you back your referral bonuses if you return : until the rewards of the crowdfunding campaign have been delivered, and at most three years after the account is closed. To have it erased as well, request full erasure (§6). Technical operating data is kept for a maximum of 3 months.

6. Your rights

In accordance with the GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, erase and port your data, the right to object to its processing, and the right to withdraw your consent at any time. To exercise these rights, write to us at dev@wizocat.com — we reply within one month at the latest.

You may also lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Authority (Belgium, autoriteprotectiondonnees.be) or with the competent authority in your country of residence.

7. Young wizards

Anyone can discover the game, with no data collection. Signing up to the Academy (providing an email address) is reserved for people aged 13 and over ; below that age, the consent of a parent or guardian is required.

8. Terms of use

WizoCat, its world, its illustrations, its rules and its code are protected by copyright and, for the WizoCat brand, by trademark law. Access to the online game is offered for personal, non-commercial use. Copying, modifying, redistributing or commercially exploiting the game or its elements without written permission is prohibited. The service is provided « as is », with no guarantee of continuous availability ; we do everything we can to keep it running as well as possible.

9. Changes to this charter

This charter may evolve with the project (new features, new services). The version in force is always available at this address, and its update date appears at the top of the page. In the event of a significant change concerning your data, Academy members will be informed by email.

This charter is written in French; the other languages are translations provided for your convenience. In case of doubt or discrepancy, the French version prevails.

🦋 A messenger butterfly

Something didn't work? Tell me what you were doing and what happened. It goes straight to the workshop.

Sent with your message: the page, your browser, the screen size, the language and the script's latest errors. Your address is only asked for if you want a reply: it is used for nothing else and is erased with the report, after 90 days.
